How Towels and Pillowcases Affect Hair Frizz

2 2

Have you ever felt like no matter what you do, you’re in a constant battle with hair frizz?

You’re not alone. In one survey, 71 percent of women listed frizz as their biggest concern with their hair.

Even with your favorite outfit on and your makeup perfected, a little bit of frizz is enough to knock your confidence.

If you are struggling with frizz, you’ve come to the right place. Read on for some frizzy hair tips to help you conquer that annoying tangled mess at the top of your head once and for all.

What Is Hair Frizz?

Though you most likely know what hair frizz looks like, you might not be aware of what is actually happening to make your hair stand up.

In flat, frizz-free hair, the different layers of the hair strand lay flat and point downward in the same direction. Frizzy hair, however, happens when the outermost layer, the cuticle layer, sticks upwards or in a different direction from the rest of the layer.

The result is hair that looks dry and messy, with small hairs and flyaways pointing in all directions. Because the hairs are all pointing in different directions, frizz often develops into tangles.

Common Causes of Frizz

Sometimes it seems like frizz is totally out of your control. However, there are many things that you are doing every day that might be contributing to your hair frizz.

Anyone who lives in a humid climate will tell you that the weather is a major cause of their frizz. The reason humid weather has such an effect on your hair comes down to one thing: your hair is craving moisture.

If you have dry, thirsty hair, your hair will be drawn to the moisture in the air. Your hair will end up reaching upwards and outwards towards the moisture, resulting in a halo of frizz around your head.

Many of the hair products we use every day are actually drying out our hair. Any products with sulfates are stripping your hair of its natural oils. Unfortunately, sulfates can be found in the ingredient list of many of the most popular shampoos and conditioners on the market.

Too much heat can also dry out the hair. If you style your hair with a flat iron or blow dryer, the excessive heat might be the cause of your frizz. This is especially true if you don’t apply a heat protectant product before styling.

Tips on How to Tame Frizzy Hair

Oftentimes it feels like no matter what you try, you aren’t able to tame and get rid of your frizzy hair. Here are some tips on how to prevent frizzy hair.

Moisture, Moisture, Moisture

Most likely, thirsty hair is the number one reason why you are experiencing frizz. Combat frizz by choosing products that are targeted at moisturizing dry hair.

Each morning, spritz your hair with some moisturizing leave-in conditioner or hair oil. You can also try using a deep conditioning treatment once a week to give your hair an extra dose of moisture.

Swap Out Your Shampoo

If your shampoo or other hair products have sulfates, you should swap them out for products without this drying ingredient. If you really want to smooth your hair, you can try a shampoo with keratin. This stand-out ingredient is naturally occurring throughout the body and can work wonders to smooth out unruly frizz.

You might also want to try adding a frizz-preventing product to your routine, especially in the summertime or if you live in a humid climate. There are a number of products on the market that will create a barrier between your hair and the humid air to lessen the effects of frizz.

Turn Down the Heat

If you regularly dry your hair with a blowdryer or use other heat styling tools, it’s time to rethink how you style your hair. Consider letting your hair air dry and style it without heat.

If you do use a blow dryer, add a diffuser attachment to your blowdryer. This will disperse the hot air so that it is less likely to leave your hair frizzy.

Are Your Towel and Pillowcase Making Your Hair Frizzy?

Even if your hair is moisturized and healthy, you might still find that you’re getting hair frizz.

Many people are surprised to learn that their towels and pillowcases might be their enemy in the battle against frizz. If you are using the wrong towel or tossing and turning at night, the friction ends up causing frizz from the moment you wake up in the morning.

Most people dry their hair with a cotton towel. The cotton fibers are likely too rough to be used on your hair.

When hair is wet, it’s porous and flexible. When you wrap it with a cotton towel, the rough fibers can pull on your hair strands and cause breakage. This breakage is another reason that you are experiencing a halo of frizz around your head.

You can prevent frizzy hair by using a microfiber hair towel. Microfiber is easier on the hair, minimizing breakage. Microfiber is also more effective at absorbing moisture from your hair.

Faster drying means less time blasting your hair with heat from the blow dryer which can dry out your locks.

Tossing and turning at night can have the same effect. If you have a cotton pillowcase, the friction from moving your hair across it can pull on your hair strands or create friction that leaves it sticking upright.

Because cotton is absorbent, it can also absorb some of the moisture in your hair while your head is resting on your pillow at night.

Swap out your cotton pillowcase for a silk pillowcase to eliminate the friction from a long night’s sleep and keep your hair moisturized. Silk pillowcases are also great for your skin and have a soft and luxurious feel that will make your bed feel comfier than ever.

Get Smooth and Glossy Hair Everyday

It’s time to eliminate hair frizz once and for all. Smooth and glossy hair is right around the corner.

Swap out your towel and pillowcase, upgrade your everyday hair routine, and watch your frizz disappear.
