Is The Disney Vacation Club Worth It? How to Decide

Are you and your family obsessed with Disney? Do you frequently visit the various parks and resorts throughout the year? Do you actively plan each vacation to surround all things, Disney?

If you’ve answered yes to any of these questions, you may be considering joining the Disney Vacation Club (DVC).

This timeshare option can allow you to enjoy your vacations to the fullest, but how can you know if it’s worth it?

That’s where we come in. Keep reading for your guide on how to decide if the DVC is for you.

What Is the Disney Vacation Club?

As previously stated, the DVC is a timeshare program run. This program allows you to own a timeshare vacation property on a Disney resort that you can return to for years to come.

This timeshare program is run by points, and these points are used by members to rent various types of Disney vacation rentals in different locations.

You can even use the points to book a cruise, or resort, and that’s only the beginning!

How Do DVC Points Work?

The Disney Vacation Club membership works by buying rental points to use on future vacations at Disney properties. When you purchase a membership, you buy a certain amount of points and choose your “home resort.”

You can choose to make one upfront purchase, or you can finance your purchase or put it on a credit card.

The points don’t change annually, but members have the option to buy more points at a later time if needed. Points can be saved and transferred if you don’t use them one year, so if you plan multiple vacations one year but none the next, that can work for you.

To know the number of points you need to purchase initially, you’ll have to consider the time of the year, the location of the resort, the length of your stay, and the size of your room.

You also have the option to purchase a DVC membership through a third party, which can help you save money on points, though it does have some restrictions. You can also always conduct a Disney Vacation Club resale or ask your timeshare exit company to create a disney vacation timeshare cancellation letter for you if your timeshare is no longer serving you. Research info. for DVC sellers to see if this option could benefit you.

Where Can You Stay With DVC Points?

The places you can stay with DVC points seem endless, which is why the program is so popular.

Members have the option to stay at any of the following properties in Walt Disney World in Florida:

  • Boardwalk Villas
  • Animal Kingdom Villas
  • Bay Lake Tower at Disney’s Contemporary Resort
  • Boulder Ridge Villas and Copper Creek Villas and Cabins at Disney’s Wilderness Lodge
  • Beach Club Villas
  • Riviera Resort
  • The Villas at Grand Floridian Resort
  • Old Key West Resort
  • Polynesian Villas and Bungalows
  • Saratoga Springs Resort

You can also stay at the Hilton Head Island Resort in South Carolin and the Vero Beach Resort in Florida.

If you stay at Disneyland in California, the only compatible place is the Villas at the Grand Californian Hotel.

And, if you’re visiting Hawaii, you can stay at the Aulani Resort.

When deciding if the DVC is worth it for you or not, understanding all of your options for the different locations is essential.

Advantages of the Disney Vacation Club

There are tons of member benefits when it comes to the DVC, which may help you in your decision. First, there are discounts available only to those apart of the vacation club.

You get discounts on annual passes, as well as food, drink, and some merchandise in the resorts and the parks.

DVC members can also book the Dining Plan, so you don’t have to sacrifice anything. Plus, most of the Disney resorts come with full kitchens, so you can save money by cooking during your vacation.

There are also special member perks in the parks, such as special DVC member-only events that occur after hours. There are also exclusive lounges in Disney World and EPCOT that are fully air-conditioned and stocked with food and beverages, accessible only to DVC members.

The best advantage of all is having a guaranteed Disney vacation every year and knowing you’ll be at a resort with plenty of room for your family, a home away from home.

You can better enjoy your trip knowing that the space you booked is yours, and you get to enjoy all of the perks that the resorts have to offer (including the water parks and pools!).

Disadvantages of the DVC

The most significant disadvantage of the DVC is the price. The upfront costs can be quite large, and if you’re unable to make a one-time payment, you can be stuck with monthly and annual expenses that can cause financial strain.

It’s also worth mentioning that, to make the club worthwhile, you’ll need to plan to go on a Disney vacation at the very least, once each year. You’ll have your membership for fifty years, and it will limit the other vacations that you can go on.

When you use your DVC points, you do have to book well in advance, so you won’t be able to visit Disney on a whim unless you plan to pay in cash instead.

The DVC is best for those whose vacations mainly surround Disney already, as these disadvantages won’t make much of a difference if that is the case.

Use This Guide to Decide

Is the Disney Vacation Club worth it? Well, it’s up to you to decide. If you calculate the costs and consider your vacation priorities, it may come up that the DVC isn’t for you.

However, if you’re a huge Disney fan and already visit the parks and resorts multiple times a year, the DVC could benefit you in endless ways.
