What Causes a Washer to Leak From The Bottom?

A washing machine is an essential household appliance. While it can last for decades without breaking down, at some point, the majority of homeowners has to face repairs. One of the major issues with washers is leaks.

When a washing machine starts leaking, homeowners start panicking. In reality, if the washer leaks, it doesn’t mean it needs to be replaced immediately. Reasons for such leaks vary from major to minor. A professional technician can eliminate the majority of issues quickly.

Let’s take a closer look at common leak causes and how to take care of them.

1. Water Supply Connection is Loose

The water comes to your washing machine through a house that’s connected to your water pipes. One of the simplest reasons why you could be seeing a leak is a problem with this hose.

It can either break, burst, or simply come loose. In the first two situations, you would need professional assistance to replace the hose. If the hose is just loose, you can re-attach it to the washing machine without help.

However, to avoid leaks in the future, it would be reasonable to call a professional washer service company. Perhaps, the reason the hose comes loose is a balancing problem. If it’s not fixed, you may experience new leaks in the nearest future.

2. Supply or Drain Hoses are Bent or Clogged

When supply and drain hoses are bent or clogged, the damage is unavoidable. If you see that the machine is leaking from the bottom, check all supply hoses. If bending is the problem, straighten the hose and inspect it carefully.

Most likely, you’ll find a small crack or tear. While it’s possible to repair hose cracks, it’s always better to replace it in order to avoid damage in the future.

3. The Pump Filter is Dirty

One of the most common reasons for washer leaks is a clogged pump filter. Many homeowners forget about appliance filters. Meanwhile, they need to be cleaned at least twice a year. Ideally, you need to clean the washer’s filter once every three months.

The filter in your washing machine serves as a protective barrier that keeps debris out of the machine’s drain hose. If buttons, coins, and other contents of your pockets enter the hose, it gets clogged and damaged. Eventually, you’ll notice leaks and other washing machine issues.

Cleaning the filter isn’t complicated. You can find extensive instructions in the machine’s manual. If you’ve lost the manual, this type of information is readily available online.

4. The Machine is Out of Balance

To work properly, your washer must be balanced. If you’ve noticed it moving around while running a cycle, the balance is off. According to Hartman’s Jacksonville appliance repair experts, even if the machine is installed properly, it can go out of balance with time.

When the machine’s balance is off, the water can start spilling out. Check the appliance’s feet to make sure they are even. If the feet are screwed on tight, but your machine is still leaking, you need to call appliance repair experts.

5. The Water Pump is Damaged

When the machine is leaking from the bottom, and all hoses are in good shape, the water pump may be damaged. It’s hard to diagnose water pump damage without experience.

If the technician diagnoses a water pump problem, consider replacing it as soon as possible. Leaking is just the first sign of damage. If you let the appliance run with a damaged pump, you may need to replace the machine in the nearest future.

6. The Machine is Overloaded

Some homeowners believe that the maximum capacity of their machine depends on how many items they can stuff in it. In reality, overloading the machine could lead to serious consequences. One of them is a bottom leak.

Make sure to follow the instructions when loading the machine. Put as much clothing as the machine can handle. It’s always better to run two cycles than to repair your washer and deal with leak consequences.

The Takeaway

If your machine is leaking from the bottom, turn it off immediately. The reasons behind the bottom leak can vary from a loose hose to a broken water pump. Consider calling technicians as soon as the problem occurs to avoid further machine damage.
